Griffi

Project

Griffi

Role

UX/UI Designer

Griffi is a project I worked on as part of the Interaction Design module while studying towards an Applied Digital Media degree at Griffith College. This was my first attempt at designing any sort of digital interface. I worked alongside two classmates to design an android mobile application for students.

The Problem

College means different things to different people. You are responsible for managing your own schedule, attending class, completing assignments, meeting deadlines, navigating the campus, and reaching out for helpwhere necessary. College life can prove difficult for some, which is why most institutions depend on a strong networkof people, organizations, and services that will help you get involved and make the most of your college experience.

Domain and User Research

We took a look at the existing online resources available to Griffith College students in order to get a better understanding of what was lacking, what was redundant and what could be improved, altered, added and removed. We compared the features available on these three platforms and analysed some positive and negative aspects which could be considered when designing our product. We also took a look at how other universities and colleges in Ireland and abroad were using apps to cater to their students needs.

We surveyed and interviewed current Griffith College students to establish what they would need from an app.

Scenario Generation and Use Cases

Our research lead us to include the following feature set in order to create a minimum viable product:

  1. 1

    Learning Materials

Review and manage coursework, learning materials, past examinations.

  2. 2

    Assignment Submission

Download assignment briefs and submit completed assignments via upload.

  3. 3

    Staff Directory

Find contact details for faculty and teaching staff.

  4. 4

    Adminstration and Organisation

Perform various administrative functions such as paying fees and requesting correspondence.

  5. 5

    Campus Map

A map feature which would make it easy to navigate the campus.

  6. 6

    Navigation News & Events

A news section for events and news from the college.

Design Learnings

What users say ≠ what they do

It is our job as designers to learn what users and businesses are currently doing and evaluate how we can make it better through research, design and testing. We made the mistake in this project of listening what users said they wanted during concept testing.

Be proactive with clients

Marco was a great client but he is an extremely busy guy. There were times when we felt he might not have understood the severe time crunch this project was under and it really helped to be proactive and communicate with him immediately when we needed something.

A prototype is just a prototype

We built our prototype in Axure, spending a lot of time developing functionality with input values and variables before the design had really been validated. I learned that a prototype should only be as functional and high fidelity as necessary to achieve the testing goals.
